STRING THEORY explores recurring themes in string painter Robert Forman’s work over the last 10 years.…

In his intricate thread paintings, Forman replaces paint with cotton, silk, linen, and rayon strands, gluing these to clay board panels.
Forman’s works are dense with complex overlays of images that create the effect of many paintings displayed simultaneously. The variation and interplay of color is both complicated and texturally alluring.  

“My goal,” he has said, “is to meld concepts and form them into one seamless image.”

ROBERT FORMAN

Robert Forman began making yarn paintings in 1969 while still in High School.  Forman says that one day, after a while of fooling around with collage in his parent's basement, he incorporated his mother's embroidery thread into his creative process, so his unique technique was launched.

While studying at The Cooper Union University, his professor Jack Whitten encouraged him to continue working in this medium; from then on, he considered them within the genre of painting.. read more
